Are you not sure if newborn sized nappies are worth the investment?

I was one of these people and soon discovered they were definitely worth it for us. With my 1st we used a mixture of disposables and terry flats to get us through the newborn days until our OSFM (one size fits most) nappies fit her. Only reason we used disposables was we were given a whole stack that lasted us until she was a couple of months old. For our 2nd I was determined to use cloth from the newborn days and disposables in hospital if need be as these were given to us in hospital. In my hospital bag I packed some Grovia Newborns, Lil Joeys, Close Pop In Newborns, Issy Bear Newborns and Bambams. We started with only 7 of these and used them combined with the disposables we were given by the hospital. My husband would bring them home to wash with my cloth pads and our 1st child’s night nappies. Our 2nd was 3.61kg when born, our biggest baby so he ended up fitting some of our OSFM from day 4 when we got home from hospital so we were able to get away with only the 7 newborn, our terry flats and the dozen OSFM that fitted him for the first few weeks. As it turned out he only fitted the newborn nappies until around 4 weeks old, the bambams though fitted him until around 4 months old. After this I was on the fence as to whether they really were a good investment or not but hopeful that I would have another baby I knew they would get more use so my only regret was not having them for my first but you only know what you know at the time.
After our 3rd being born weighing only 3.13kg and 47.5cm (our smallest) I was super thankful for having these newborn nappies as terry flats were just way too bulky in the beginning and none of the smaller OSFM we had fit her. We ended up having to invest in a few more newborn nappies and I started to actually like prefolds more then I did with my 2nd. Thinner flats have been super handy as well. This time round they have definitely been well worth the investment as she is still wearing them at 7 months and 7kg. She is only short and while chubby her legs are still pretty dainty. The only issue we have some days are outwetting but have been able to easily boost them with inserts we had already and face washers. I also preferred to use the newborn nappies while out and about and terry flats and prefolds while at home.
Most of the newborn nappies only go up to around 5.5kg but I find that weight isn’t the only guideline, it really depends on the size of the individual baby. No one ever knows what shape their baby will be or how big or small so investing in a couple to begin with or a newborn nappy library works for a lot of people to tide them over until OSFM nappies fit. Prefolds and covers are also an economical way to do cloth from day 1 if you don’t want the huge investment. But after my personal experience I definitely think newborn nappies are worth it even if you only get a few weeks out of them you are still saving money and helping the environment and I was one who originally thought I wouldn’t waste my money. Smaller make one size fits most are a good idea as well and you can use the newborn hack to make them work, if you have any questions about this I’m more then happy to help guide you.
